The beginnings
Yongling Crèche & Kindergarten was voluntarily initiated by an individual youth in 1984. Tibetan Parents of Dharamsala helped him. They wanted to build up this small Crèche & Kindergarten for the many young children who were not old enough to attend the day school but needed a place to be while their parents were at work. Initially the basic idea was to ask for some initiative from the parents on the education of their children.
The school was named after the late Senior Tutor of H. H. Dalai Lama who was very kind to Tibetans by giving a very good monastic education to H.H. the Dalai Lama. With that he was 97 Gaden throne holder, particularly he was the main inspiration to the members and given a loan. He provided special prayer for the success of this project.
History of the buildings
It all started in a small rented hut. Later on it was shifted to the present land to have a safer and better environment for the children. Then with the help of an American couple and Mrs Wager we were able to build a room sized 24 by 20 ft which was everything for the school, meaning class room, kitchen, play ground and napping place. After that we tried to build more classrooms. But once built there were not enough funds to build a roof so they had to remain without roof for almost 3 years. Fortunately in 1987 with the great help of Mrs. Joyce Murdock – a Tibet-supporter since 1959 and permanent resident of Dharamsala – we were able to approach the SOIR IM and the Save The Children Fund England and they very positively came forward to help us. Then on October 27th 1987 we were able to build the main classroom which was the happiest day for the Tibetan children and their director. The Crèche & Kindergarten has faced a lot of obstacles to reach the present status but it did.
Across generations
The basic idea of the director is to give education at the right time combined with proper Tibetan culture, which is the identification of the Tibetans. Until today about 1000 students have graduated from this Crèche & Kindergarten and they are serving in different fields in the community. Many of them are married and their own children are admitted in the school. It is one of the most beneficial projects for the Tibetan community. We are sure that it wouldn't have been such a great success without the blessing of H.H. the Dalai Lama and all the sympathizers and devoted staffs. All the friends, sympathizers, staff and parents of the children share the success of this project. We teach Tibetan and English alphabets and Numbers. Today there are 250 children attending this school and there are 20 children in the hostel who attend other schools around.
